There are may possible reasons why there seems to be a change recently in working hours. Word is out that working hours are not the same old 9-5 anymore. One recent survey published by the Financial Times tries to find out many possible reasons for this extraordinary phenomenon. But before you draw conculsions, be forewarned that this mostly relates to citydwellers rather than rural ones.

As per the report by Till Roenneberg, a Munich-based author/researcher, the human clock doesn't work by the clocks of employers; thus the best performance of workers need not be at this 9-5 timing but when they are best prepared. This effectively means letting people choose their work time and expecting them to deliver the best they can.

See Who Works When

Even in older times, working at night or odd hours was not entirely unheard of. Healthcare workers and police on the night beat are a few professions that require non-traditional working hours. But the recent social changes, which are coupled by the growth outsourcing work to other countries, has seen an increase in the type of jobs which require workers to work non-traditional hours.

Technology workers such as software and information engineers are often compelled to work almost around the clock. The old 9-5 hours are often not satisfying to such workers, as they often work well into the night and because his or her biological clock is often mismatched with traditional working hours.

The computer controlled, wired world has made it possible, and also essential for many types of workers to connect to their peers at times they become available. This may be 11am or later, changing the work habits of this century forever.

Choose your working time carefully when work can demand your attention more. It is essential to remember that it is not always the boss who gets you burn the midnight oil because some people are driven by more than the fear of boss. Passion, targets and goals have set the bar high for individual achievement today, which is pushing working hours to the breaking point.

Ways to announce you're pregnant

E cards

One of the simplest ways to announce your pregnancy is by e card. Hundreds of websites offer free e cards or some you can pay for.

Buy them a gift

Go to any store that sells small baby items. A dollar store is a good choice if you want to keep it low budget. Buy items like baby bibs, bottles, rattles, pacifiers, baby shoes, etc. Also you will need to buy small boxes for the items to fit in and gift wrapping paper. When you have time alone, place each item individually into a box and wrap them. Place a tag on each box for the person who will be receiving it. This can be done for your parents, his parents, your husband, sisters and brothers and so on.

You can even place a little note in each one saying, "We're having a baby!"

Ultrasound, baby's first picture

Not all doctors give an ultrasound when you first find out you're pregnant. Some do, however and this is another cute way to make your happy announcement. After you have your 1st ultrasound have copies made for the number of people you want to share your announcement with. Copies can be made in color for picture quality at a number of drug stores that offer film development. Buy enough frames for every copy that you had made. Also buy gift wrap and boxes for each.

When you have alone time, frame each ultrasound and wrap them carefully (stuffing the box is best since it is a breakable). Place a tag on each box to the person you plan on giving it to.

This is especially great for Christmas time, etc. Your family will be so excited by your baby's first picture!

Paper Cards

Another great idea (if you are able to find them) is give out father's day and grandparent's day cards. If you can find the cards, fill them out saying: "Happy Father's Day, etc. By the way, we are having a baby! "This will hit them from left field, especially if it is done completely out of the blue. If you have a hard time finding these cards because stores only sell them around the holidays they are intended for, try looking on the internet.

Word Search

This can be time consuming, especially if you have a lot of people to tell, but it is adorable. You will need a computer, printer and some type of software you can type on. On your computer type out various letters in no particular order in 10 columns across the screen and 10 columns down. When you finish you should have 100 letters in the form of a box (just like word search in a newspaper). Somewhere in the jumble of letters (wherever you decide) take out enough of the letters to put "We're Pregnant" or "We're having a baby".

Proud Daddy and Grandparents t shirts

Another cute idea is to buy baby t shirts for your family. The t shirts should reflect who will be receiving them.

If you are considering a home office, you may feel a little overwhelmed at the logistics of getting started. After all, there are a lot of things that need to be considered. Setting up your home office should be an exciting time, not a stressful one. Taking it one thing at a time will make it easier and a lot more fun. Most of the things that you will need fall into 3 categories: work station, organization, and communication. Here are a few ideas to get you started.

Work Station
Your work station will most likely involve the most planning and expense. This is going to include your desk, chair, and computer among other things. You can go simple or extravagant. If you are just starting out and don't have a big budget, keep it simple and put your money into the things that will help you work more comfortably and efficiently first.

Keep your desk functional and space appropriate without being flimsy. There will be plenty of time to upgrade to that cherry desk with the marble table top later. One with a file drawer and CPU cubby built in will help you maximize the use of your space. An "L" or "U" shaped desk has the advantage of giving you a workspace for your computer and keyboard while also allowing for space to spread out documents that you are working on and/or a writing space. Many people find that a desk that has a keyboard tray allows them to sit more ergonomically correct while others prefer to use the keyboard on the desktop. The other ergonomically important aspect of your office will be your chair.

Your chair should be something that you splurge on. You will want a chair that has adjustments for height and back support. You should be able to sit at the back of the chair, with your feet flat on the floor and have about 2 inches between the seat of the chair and the back of your knees. For those people with shorter legs that are not able to set the height of their chair to comfortably reach their desk, and still have their feet flat on the ground, a foot stool is recommended. A cushioned chair with fabric is also usually preferable to leather or a hard surface. The cushioning will pad your backside while the fabric allows it breathe during extended sitting. You may be spending a lot of time in this chair talking on the phone or staring at a computer screen and you want to make sure it is comfortable.

Next you will need to consider your computer and monitor. If you already have a computer, evaluate its efficiency and ability to handle the increased demands that will be put on it while going from recreational use to full time business use. Do you have enough memory and processing speed to handle the additional files and workload? You may be able to either simply upgrade your current computer to handle the extra load, or it may be necessary to buy a new computer. The major computer makers (Dell, Gateway, Mac, IBM) can usually help you with what you will need in terms of memory, processor speed and hard drive space for what you plan on using the computer for. Check out the websites or go to your local electronics store and talk to the sales people. They are generally very knowledgeable and willing to help.

Your monitor is going to be a work station tool that you don't want to skimp on. A flat screen is best. They take up less space, they are better on your eyes, and also use 50% less energy. Shoot for 19 inches if you can get one within your budget. If you do a lot of detailed graphics work, 21 inches will be preferable. Just like your chair, the return on your investment with your monitor is going to be less stress and strain on your body and allow you to work more comfortably for longer periods of time.

Organization
As I stated before a desk that has a file drawer built in will save you the most space, but the most important thing is that you do have one whether it is attached or not. Some people may also be tempted to combine their personal and business file cabinets. I wouldn't recommend this unless you can devote a complete drawer or drawers to business only. The co-mingling of personal and business files only leads to confusion and you will be able to find things much more quickly if they are separate.

Another organizational tool that you may consider is a contact manager. Only you will know if this tool is something that you can use, but if you deal with a lot of different clients or if you need to keep a list of potential clients and business contacts, a contact manager is going to help you tremendously. It will allow you keep a list of all of your contacts and their essential details such as where you met, personal details about them, and what services they may be interested in. It will also keep track of your appointments and to do list to keep you organized and on task.

Communication
Your communications are going to be vital to your new home office. This is another place where you want to make sure that you don't skimp. Make sure that your entire communication system, from Internet access to fax is efficient and projects an image of professionalism.

First of all, dial up just won't do. It may have been fine for your occasional surfing or for the kids to do their homework. But dial up does not move at the speed of business. You will be wasting enormous amounts of time waiting for your downloads whether it is web pages or email. It will be worth it to upgrade to DSL or cable.

For your phone and fax communications there are a number of options. When establishing your home office communications important things to consider are image, flexibility, and space. Instead of the expense and hassle of installing a second phone line, consider a virtual phone system that will forward your calls to your already existing phone line. There are a number of advantages of setting up your communications this way.

Your image is going to be very important as you establish your home office. One of the first impressions people will get of you and your business is when they call you. First and foremost, it is important to keep your personal calls separate from your business calls. Nothing screams unprofessional louder than your child answering a client's call. A virtual phone system will assist in the professional image department in a number of ways.

One, it will allow you to have the call announced to you so that you, and your child, know that it is a business call coming in and can handle it appropriately. Two, most virtual phone systems have an automated attendant, just like the Fortune 500 companies have, that will allow you to greet your callers with a professional recording such as, "Thank you for calling ABC Consulting. For sales press 1, for billing press 2". Third, it will have voicemail that you can access online, through email or over the phone. That way, if you do miss a call, and regardless of where you are, you can get your messages quickly, easily and get back to your clients in a timely matter.

For flexibility a virtual phone system can't be beat. It will allow you to transfer your business calls to anywhere you are. So when you are in your home office your calls will forward to you there and when you need to leave, your business calls can follow you on your cell phone. After all, one of the advantages of working from home is the freedom to step out when you need, or want to.

For saving space in your new home office, combine your fax communications with your new virtual phone system. Fax machines take up a lot of space, not to mention ink, paper and maintenance. Most virtual phone systems will have fax features as well that will allow you to send and receive your faxes right from your computer. With electronic, or virtual, fax you can scrap the fax machine completely.

Establishing a home office is an exciting time. Don't let the logistics of it overwhelm you. Breaking things down into categories helps you to focus on one thing at a time. You need a work station, organization and communications. Taking each one separately and determining what you will need for each will make things easier on you. You'll have your home office set up in no time.

It is true that a small portion of the criminal base is also educated - we have the so-called "white collar" criminals and of course, symptomatic social crimes such as drug addiction and domestic violence happens across all classes. But for the large part, it is notable that a distinct lack of education is to blame for the majority of the criminal class failing to find a more socially acceptable means of achieving a livelihood.

The difficulty here is that by the time you've recognized the problem, it's too late to fix. We can encourage children as much as we want to to not drop out of school, but the only ones likely to listen to us are the ones who wouldn't have dropped out in the first place. The adults we get out of the system who are already showing a criminal record are already too fixed in their habits and unlikely to return to school anyway - especially since the school system isn't in a great hurry to take them back.

Perhaps we should have the schools enact a "no-release-until-graduation" policy - where you are considered truant if you are not attending school for as long as you live without a diploma. Yes, we can sit here all day coming up with one brilliant solution after another.

Yet we throw legislation at the school system like there's no tomorrow, and it's all to no avail. Every president we get launches an ambitious plan to reform education, include every child, beef up curriculum, hire more teachers, build more schools, write better text books. What else can we do? We shovel billions of dollars at the problem; the problem just gets bigger. If we simply raked all the dollars into a pile and burned them, would the problems be any worse?

While our under-educated criminal class isn't specific to the United States, the sheer poverty of our education system is compared to other countries. Consistently, other countries soundly trounce our students in competitions. The United States shows up on those list of rankings of the industrialized countries, and here we are in 12th place, 16th place, 25th place. How is this happening? Adjusting for currency, the United States spends more and gets back less on its educational system than any other industrialized country.

And yet, here we have the autodidacts. Don't know what an autodidact is? Well, there goes the educational system failing people again! An autodidact (it says in the dictionary) is a mostly self-taught person; is typically someone who has an enthusiasm for self-education and a high degree of self-motivation to attain it. Such ability has led to the success of many famous and successful individuals in history.

Autodidacts are especially prevalent in technology. These people simply educated themselves for free at the public library, got a computer as soon as they could afford one, educate themselves daily on the Internet, and picked up a technology-related trade simply by practicing it at home until they got good at it!

Yes, you could take business school to learn spreadsheets, but what about just downloading a spreadsheet program for free and reading the help file? People do it every day! Autodidacts fill out part of both the drop-out quotient, and those who attain a degree anyway.

The degree is usually "just enough" while the autodidact continues to educate themselves on their own. A related concept is a "polymath" an old expression meaning the same thing. Imagine if somebody taught themselves higher mathematics just by figuring it all out on paper.

Tip #1: Research your competitor’s websites. Look at how they market their items. Doing this will give you ideas about what you can do better when building your own list of opt-in subscribers.

Tip #2: Visit forums. Go to Google and type in whatever product your MLM company promotes along with the word forum. In return, you could promote the benefits of chiropractic medicine to your customers along with a recommendation for your local prospects to visit the chiropractor and receive a 50% discount off the first office visit. The chiropractor, of course, would need to be willing to take 50% off the first visit. This would be a win-win situation for both of you. You would get more exposure for your business and your chiropractor more patients.

Tips#3: Create your own unique lead capture or splash page. This page should have the solutions to the problems your research showed people have as well as a link to your site to click for more information.

Tip#4: Create a newsletter. You could use your lead capture page as a means for people to sign up for your newsletter. Your newsletter should have good quality content and provide useful information to your subscribers. It should be sent out at least once a month and can include any other back-end offers or products that you promote which might be of potential interest to your list. Of course, links on how people can sign up or get the products of your MLM company would also be included as well!

These are simple tips that you can use to create your own unique opt-in MLM list of prospects on an on-going basis. They will help you stand out from the field of distributors of your company, and help your business to continue to grow.

This segment of the food service industry is growing more rapidly than any other area with sales forecasted near $145 billion this year. And this comes at a time in our society where watching what you eat and counting calories is a daily occurrence for most of us.

As a restaurant management recruiter, I have seen the interest in QSR candidates explode throughout the nation. Never has there been this kind of job need in the country for such a specialized group of individuals. Although it may not be a sexy profession to most, it is in fact a precious commodity.

The truth is that QSR have been around since 1912 and because we are predominantly lazy in our “Americanized” lives, it will only grow bigger and bigger. Sure we could eat healthier if we prepared meals ourselves, but the monopolies that control our produce and meat industries make it very unfeasible for the average family to eat healthy ALL of the time. They encourage us to inflate our waistlines and increase our fat intake because of the price factor.

While inflation goes up and the prices of our purchases increase, the majority of people find their salaries lagging. I remember as a child in the 1980’s when inflationary pay raises were standard. These weren’t performance reviews and everyone got what was called “the cost of living” raise. Those were the great times and I don’t think we will ever see a compassionate corporate America like that ever again.

So because of the price point at most QSR, we continue to frequent them and show no signs of slowing down. We simply can’t afford to eliminate them from our lives, even if we wanted.

And we are lazy.

Although the nutritional value has been increased in most QSR concepts, actually the non-nutritional items like trans fats and other preservatives have been decreased or eliminated; I believe it is the service factor that has garnered more attention. Never have you been able to visit a fast food chain and get your order quickly, accurately and with a smile. Yes, I said “A SMILE”! There is so much focus on providing GREAT service in the QSR now, that I think the improved service levels coupled with an expanded “health conscience” menu will only hurt the casual dining concepts in the future.

Meanwhile, the casual dining concepts are slugging it out and becoming increasingly more aware of their weaknesses and taking action. When was the last time that McDonalds announced they were laying off 4000 people because their same store sales sucked and they didn’t do enough demographic research before sinking $2 million in to building a unit on leased land? Never, because they are smart. They don’t chase the money and their customers. Instead their customers find them and beg them to take their money and do it quick! Really, it is the best business concept out there and probably always will be.

Lets face it, the fast food industry is here to stay and it will continue to become more important to our way of life in the future.

And we are still lazy!
