When we are under stress, we start to experience wide swings in mood. In a new relationship, for example, we are ecstatic when the telephone rings, depressed and tearful when we don't hear anything for two or three days. When we are ill, we are elated when tests come back negative, fearful and exhausted when a problem is identified. Working under a demanding tyrant, we are upbeat with any hint of praise and despondent when the inevitable criticism splashes in our faces.

The pervasiveness of being out of work touches so many parts of our lives: our finances, our family, our egos, and our inner sense of self. Because the anxiety of unemployment reaches to the core of our comfortable lifestyles, we suffer from a changing array of intense emotional ups and downs.

Some kind of emotional balance is necessary if we are to stay healthy, maintain our relationships, and be able to effectively function in job search. Reaching such a balance is difficult and made more so by our own inner turmoil. How do we re-establish that balance that will make us feel like our old selves, whole, optimistic, and complete?

Here are a couple of strategies to try.

1. Regain a broader perspective.

When we are confronted by a host of problems, we tend to put on blinders and only see the obstacles that are staring us in the face. We lose touch with what else is happening in the greater world we inhabit. Our conversation narrows to the one subject that dogs us night and day - the need to find work. Friends become bored with our egocentric outlook and relationships suffer from our obsession with our present misfortune. We may become prickly because of the fear and anger we are experiencing. We may still harbor anger at being laid off and our bitterness seeps into the affectionate ties we have with others.

Despite the discomfort and dangers of your present situation, remember that a whole universe exists out there that is totally ignorant and indifferent to your fate. Try to live in both worlds. During the time you have scheduled for job search, make that your total focus. For the rest of the day, enlarge your view to see what else is happening around you.

Read the newspaper, watch the news, keep up with a changing world. Spend time finding out what is happening in your children's lives and how the workday went for your spouse. Take a walk and visit with neighbors to talk about local events and community politics. Not only will you be more welcome when you are no longer totally consumed by your jobless state, but you will feel more like your old self, a cog in the real world rather than an isolated alien.

2. Develop your empathy.

We all need to learn, as the old adage says, to "walk a mile in another's moccasins." You are so anxious and fearful about the future that it is easy to dismiss the worries of others that seem petty in comparison. Remember that to someone who has just been diagnosed with a terminal disease, your layoff may seem trivial. The significance of our problems is always relative. Because they are so close to us, and dominate our minds, we tend to feel that OUR problems are the biggest and that no one really understands the challenges we face.

To turn our backs on our own concerns, at least occasionally, and to reach out to understand and help others with their own difficulties, gives us some distance from the ballooning fears that threaten to overwhelm us. Distance confers objectivity and detachment, qualities we desperately need if we are to develop creative solutions.

Bury yourself for a while in the problems of others and you start to see that nothing is quite as awful as those who are involved believe it is. You'll find that, as a dispassionate outsider, you can readily see the options and alternatives available.

Your teenaged daughter's devastation over her boyfriend's rejection may seem like a gross over-reaction. Try to look at it from her point of view and you'll notice the similarity to your own situation - the pain and discomfort of a personal world turned upside down.

Explore the frustration and anger of your brother-in-law's stymied career and you'll experience the same emotional dejection at his lack of success as you feel after an interview that didn't look promising.

Our problem-solving abilities thrive with practice and helping others is a marvelous way to develop your own skills while giving them your much needed support. Start to personally identify with the victims of natural disasters who not only have no job, but are also without a roof over their head and desperately missing loved ones who were lost.

Every time we move a little out of our circumscribed personal worlds, our vision expands and our problems shrink in comparison, allowing us to rise above them and deal with them forcefully as we never can when they loom large and insurmountable.

You scramble to tie up loose ends, finish any work that must be done, and then head out. In a flash, you're out on the lake, driving a boat and pulling your waterskiing friend behind you.

As your buddy motions you to give it more gas, you give him the okay sign and push the throttle forward. You look back to make sure you aren't going too fast for the old-timer. As you turn, you accidentally tip your beer and the frothy suds quickly find their way into the console controlling the speed of the boat.

The taught rope pulling your friend begins to relax as the boat slows. Noticing the slack, your waterskiing friend motions frantically for you to give it more gas. You smack the console hard with the palm of your hand. After all, nothing cures a malfunctioning boat like some vented frustration. As sales increase, we again take a break from all our hard effort, apparently never learning the affect of our cycle.

To keep sales at a consistent speed, you need do nothing more than have the discipline to maintain regular activity doing what you do best – talking to people who have the ability to say "yes" to you. This shouldn't change the week before or after major holidays; it only changes because you allow it to.

Instead of waiting for your sales manager to come in with his fancy pie charts and activity reports, take control of your own vessel and regulate your own speed. Set your own goals higher than those set by those who sign your paychecks. Truly professional salespeople treat every day of the week as if it were the last day before a long weekend, cramming an average person's week of work into a single day.

Instead of letting your thoughts drift off to what you will be doing this weekend, or remembering what you did last weekend, think of what you can do now to make a friend and a sale. With a consistent speed, you'll enjoy a nice ride of sales while your competitors are left floating in your wake.

Here are 5 ways to make your references work for you, not against you.

(1)Skip the 'To Whom It May Concern' letters.

Clients often tell me their well-meaning bosses offered to write a 'To Whom It May Concern' letter on your behalf. These letters used to be common 20 or 30 years ago.

Today, corporate employers rarely pay attention to these letters. In fact, often hiring managers will be skeptical about any written correspondence.

Let's face it: employers tend to be conscious of lawsuits. They prefer phone calls that are not recorded. When they need a letter, they supply their own forms and they prefer letters sent directly to them.

You will find exceptions in some industries. For example, university professors and administrators typically submit three letters of reference with each application. Often these references will be mailed directly to the hiring department.

(2) Research the way your present boss answers a request: "Can you supply a reference for John?"

Ask fellow employees about their experiences. You might even get a friend to call on your behalf or hire a reference checking service. Expect surprises.

Some well-meaning managers avoid giving anyone a glowing recommendation. 'Nobody is that great,' they say. 'I want to be honest.'

But of course everybody else exaggerates and your reference's well-intended honesty will place you at a disadvantage.

Other references are just clueless. My colleague 'Nick' genuinely wanted me to get a great opportunity when he wrote a letter for me. But he added a line suggesting I might be 'somewhat eccentric.' I was applying for administrative positions in universities, which tend to be fairly conservative.

I had no idea what was going on and wondered why I wasn't getting more invitations to interview. One day an interview committee member asked me, 'What on earth does he mean?'

'We are friends,' I said, truthfully, and reached for the phone.

Nick was completely baffled ('I meant it as a compliment') but he agreed to revise his letters so I would sound like the well qualified, experienced, and highly professional candidate I was.

(2) Before supplying names, get permission (and be sure they are still available).

You come to the moment of truth in your job search. Your future boss says, 'I am impressed with what I've seen. May I call a few references?'

To prepare for this moment, get permission to give out names. And take the extra step: Find out what happens next.

Your boss may be required to refer all calls to Human Resources. Or she may be moving to a new career and you are part of the past she wants to forget.

When I taught at a university, students often asked if they could list me as a reference for jobs and graduate programs. But sometimes I would get a surprise request from someone I barely remembered, creating awkward moments for all of us.

After I left the university, I was not always available to serve as a reference. While traveling or moving, I couldn't respond to requests, even when I wanted to. If I'd known my name would be brought up as a reference, I would have warned the students and encouraged them to find alternatives.

(3) Watch for red flags in the hiring process.

If your job prospects get derailed mysteriously, over and over again, consider hiring a professional service to check your references. The service will handle your request professionally and (if you've chosen wisely) ethically. They'll call to say, "I'm checking references on Tim Toole."

A quality service will not pretend to be an employer. They don't have to. You'd be amazed how managers will respond to a simple request for a reference.

One reference-checking consultant told me, "The manager who answered the phone said, 'Just a minute.' Then, without covering the mouthpiece, he yelled, 'What did the lawyers tell us to say about Tim?'"
