Demystifying the Auditor’s Gathering of Evidence: Part One

Description:

The result of a company’s daily transaction of business is summarized in the financial statements. In these statements, we can see how established the company is, if it is earning or not, and if it is using its resources well.

Content:

The result of a company’s daily transaction of business is summarized in the financial statements. In these statements, we can see how established the company is, if it is earning or not, and if it is using its resources well. As such, the preparation of the financial statements is a complete managerial responsibility. Just because the management has absolute control on the data presented in the financial statements, the users, such as creditors and government regulatory bodies, cannot put a high reliance on it. This is the reason why CPA’s are hired to conduct audits.
The auditor’s responsibility is to express an opinion as to whether the financial statements are presented in accordance with certain criteria, usually generally accepted accounting principles. As part of the process, the auditor has the primary objective of detecting material understatements or overstatements embodied in the financial statements. In order to do so, the auditor gathers evidence to provide an adequate basis for his opinion. To guide the auditor in performing the activity, the Auditing Standards and Practices Council (ASPC) issued Statement of Auditing Standards of the Philippines (SASP) No. 7 – Audit Evidence and Documentation. In this statement, the third standard of fieldwork is laid: “Sufficient competent evidential matter is to be obtained through inspection, observation, inquiries, and confirmations to afford a reasonable basis for an opinion regarding the financial statements under examination.”
It could be noted that the evidential matter should be “sufficient” and “competent.” What constitute sufficiency and competence of evidence is a question that constantly perplexes the auditor in planning and performing the audit. Different situations call for different approach; unfortunately, there are no fast rules that can be readily applied to all situations. However, there are some generalizations made to guide the auditor in obtaining evidence, and these principles affect both the competence and sufficiency of evidence.

Bringing Life to your Workshops: Avoiding the Grave Mistake

Description:

You can't just wing a workshop. There are some strategies that make for a sure fire preparation for your workshop. Don't flop and lose your business.

Content:

Workshops aren’t that difficult, but they can fall apart. Audiences come expecting to hear from an expert. Students expect to hear from someone who is knowledgeable. The problem is not that you might not know your material. But, the problem comes when you seem like you don’t know your material.

I recently watched a workshop where the teacher was working with no more than ten students. That’s a manageable class size. Could you imagine working an audience of over a hundred? A class of ten to fifteen gives you the chance to get to know people, to look in their eyes and be more personable. You will actually know their names.

But, there can still be problems. Of course, you know the material. But, you have to be able to know it frontward and backward. You can’t just walk into a workshop thinking you are going to wing it because you know the material that well. After all, it is your business and the grave mistake is flopping in front of your audience.

The teacher mentioned above was one of my students learning how to run an art workshop. She was so nervous that she forgot half of the things she intended to talk about for that day. She didn’t have notes ready to help her recall anything. I gave her a few tips after allowing her to struggle through that class. After all, those students sitting in that classroom were soon going to get their chance to be nervous in front of their own classroom so it was a good learning experience for all.

Pulling my student aside after class, I asked her how much she had prepared. That has to be the most important thing that you have to put yourself through. You might know the material, but a classroom dynamic changes everything. Staring at blank faces ready to learn all of a sudden gives you sense of responsibility. It also makes you nervous because not many of us are natural public speakers.

Rehearse your material over and over. Then, rehearse it again just before the class. You should always have a good idea of the flow of information. Your beginning point leads to another point. That point leads to another point. You should know every point until you get to your wrap up point. If you know your art concepts quite well, then you should be able to wing the explanations and descriptions. But, you have to know your direction from point to point.

The best strategy is to write all of your art concepts down so that you can see them. This helps you make a complete connection to your brain. But, it also helps you see what order they should be presented. Build your workshop from concept to concept based on what your students need to know first. There is always a logical order to presenting art concepts that make it easy for your students to follow. But, also that serves to make it easy for you to remember.

Now, since you have the concepts already written down, take them to class with you and place them out of the way. Just within reach, but out of the way so that you only have to refer to them when you forget where you are. You can practice a natural rhythm to presenting ideas, checking your notes and returning to the audience so that it doesn’t look like you even skipped a beat. Plus, your audience will expect you to have a certain amount of reminders. Most big audiences will even notice Teleprompters at the front of the auditorium to help a public speaker keep moving from point to point. Who says you can’t have some notes for your own workshops?

When you are trying to present your audience with information they don’t know or understand, you have to come across as if you know the information quite well. It builds confidence. It builds their confidence in you. But when you fall apart, you lose most of your audience right off the bat. The rest are soon to follow. For anyone who is into giving workshops for a business, make sure you keep your audience in their seats by knowing the material you plan to present!

7 Tips for Re-entering the Job Force

Description:

Re-entering the workforce can be a challenge, but it's one that can be overcome. Having a plan and being prepared will help to make the re-entry a successful and rewarding experience.

Content:

Re-entering the job force after a break in your career can be a little overwhelming. Crazy thoughts may race through your mind. Where do I begin? What if there are no jobs? What if there are jobs but no one will hire me?

Yes, looking for employment is always unnerving. But, with a little planning and calm thinking, you can make job re-entry a positive turning point in your life. Here, then, are a few steps you might consider while making the move to re-enter the job market:

1. Recognize all your options. Don't be limited by the work you were doing in the past. Make sure your previous work was something which really made you happy, not just a way to earn a living. It can be dissatisfying to get a job, be there a few months, and then realize it's no longer something you want to do. Consider all your options, because, yes, you do have options. Make sure that resuming your previous career is the right path before heading back in that direction. Accepting temporary or freelance work would be a good way to experiment with new fields and opportunities. Many temp agencies these days are offering more benefits, such as health insurance and vacation pay, which makes the experimenting a lot easier on your budget.

2. Be realistic. If you choose to go back into your previous career, be mindful that significant changes may have occurred in your career, making it impossible for to step back into the same position. You might have to actually take a step back on the career ladder. For example, people who were once mid-managers may now need to consider entry-level positions until you gain the necessary skills.

3. Brush up on your skills. If you've become "outdated," do whatever is necessary to become marketable again (especially in highly technical fields). Luckily there are enormous educational opportunities out there which will help you become marketable once again. Many community colleges, while offering A.A. degrees, also offer certificate programs in many different fields. There are also many different colleges or institutions which offer online courses, which you can take at your own convenience. Check with the local unemployment office to see what classes they may offer. Volunteer work is also a way to gain some updated skills.

4. Be positive and enthusiastic. Yes, there are obstacles, but it's important to focus on the advantages. People re-entering the workforce have experience, skills and knowledge that make them more desirable candidates than those entering the workforce for the first time.

5. Update your resume. Go through your resume to accentuate the positives. If you have access to career counseling, take your resume in for an expert's opinion. Perhaps a career counselor can give you pointers about your resume.

6. Prepare for job interviews. Invest in a new suit or business clothes. If there are any classes on interviewing skills taught in your community, take them. A little preparation goes a long way in an interview.

7. Use connections. Let's face it; sometimes it's who you know. Often the best way to re-enter the workforce is to contact former bosses and colleagues, and use networking to find out where the opportunities are.

Re-entering the workforce can be a challenge, but it's one that can be overcome. Having a plan and being prepared will help to make the re-entry a successful and rewarding experience.

How to Make Money in Your Bunny Slippers

Description:

Home is the new office, and slippers are the high heels. Want to get on board and start your home based business? Read on for advice on how to get your business name out there via article marketing.

Content:

Have you dreamed of working from home but just don't know how to get started? Take it from me, it's not as difficult as you might think. Warm up the bathrobe in the drier and get ready to cozy up with a cup of tea. Sound like the way to start the day? You don't have to tell me!

It's true that making money online isn't as easy as it might have been 10 years ago, for the simple fact that it's such an attractive option to so many people. There is a mistaken impression out there -- probably encouraged by already-successful Internet entrepreneurs -- that you have to be some kind of techno-wizard to create a successful home business.

Guess what? You don't need magic potions, intricate spells or even a great big brain to set up an online enterprise. All you need is a website, some good content and the will to write a few short articles a week (or even every month) about your business.

The first step to putting away those three-inch heels for good is to get yourself a website. This can be the most daunting part of the process, especially for people who don't consider themselves "technical."

The great thing about the Internet is that it's always changing, and people are coming up with easier, more user-friendly ways to do things (like build websites) all the time. You can register a domain name at DreamHost, GoDaddy or Register.com if you want to go the paid route. You can also visit FreeWebs and GeoCities to sign up for a free domain. Get ready to get creative, because a lot of the names you come up with might be taken.

Finding a unique domain is the easy part. To build a website from the ground up requires either extensive knowledge of HTML or knowledge of a program that builds HTML for you, such as DreamWeaver. Buying this software gets expensive: It costs $400 for a new copy of DreamWeaver.

But wait! Before you run away in fear, there's an easier way by far -- and it's free! The best way for a non-technical person to get their online business up and running is to start a blog. You can sign up for a free space at Blogger, Backpack or WordPress, and as soon as you put cursor to page you're on your way to making extra income!

You can set up your blog however you want, with pictures, links to songs or a digital portfolio. You can upload all of these things very easily using Blogger's super-friendly interface. I set up my blog in less than five minutes, and I couldn't code my way out of a paper bag, thank you very much!

Once you're set up with an online space, all you need to do is start writing. You can write about anything at all, such as a service you offer. For instance, I'll be writing about my freelance services so that people who are looking for help will (hopefully!) be able to find me.

But, you say, the Web is such a big lonely place -- How can I get noticed among all the other websites out there? That's where the beauty of Internet marketing comes in. The same content you use to create your online space can work for you, driving traffic right back to your site from all over the world.

Simply by writing a few articles every week (or every month, if you prefer), you can increase links back to your site, improve your PageRank and drive traffic right onto your blogspot! How cool is that?

Article distribution services such as SubmitYourArticles, isnare and Article Marketer offer several different membership levels and various amenities. Each one has different features that might be attractive to you depending upon the amount and kind of marketing you want to do.

I both use and contribute to Article Marketer, because I've found it gives me the best value for my dollar. Even non-paying members can submit unlimited articles -- but with a slower processing time.

You may find that you don't want to submit more than four articles a month, in which case isnare's $37/month program might be right for you. PhantomWriters is also a good place to look. They charge $34 per article submitted, but they have very informative content posted right on their homepage. Even if you decide to do business elsewhere, it's a good resource for reading tips about writing and marketing.

The idea is to distribute your articles to as many content sites as possible, because each of those sites represents a link back to you, and every time those links are published, you have a greater chance of making a sale!

I've been doing article marketing for about three weeks now, and although I was skeptical at first that I'd be able to keep up any kind of volume, once I got started I found it was really easy to write. My goal is to write two articles each week day and see how that affects my business.

My advice? Don't let yourself be intimidated by high-tech solutions to low-tech problems. You can start playing with the big boys right now -- right in your bunny slippers.

Get Accurate Career Information

Description:

If I have learned anything in my thirty years of being a career counselor, it is that spending your life doing a career that you do not love is a waste of time.

Content:

If I have learned anything in my thirty years of being a career counselor, it is that spending your life doing a career that you do not love is a waste of time. In fact, I'd go so far as to say that choosing the wrong career for you could be one of the most serious mistakes a person can ever make. Getting accurate career information is hugely important because of this.

Think about it. You will spend thirty or more years of your life working full time. That is a really long time to spend doing something that you do not absolutely love. The thing I hate seeing most is people who feel like they are tied in to a profession that they hate. I became a career counselor to help solve this problem. I love working with college students giving them proper career information that helps them to make informed decisions about career choices.

One of the most important ways to enter a career wisely is to inform yourself with accurate career information. I cannot stress enough how important it is that you discover the truth about any profession you are thinking of entering. The worst thing you can do is enter a career blindly. So take time and find ways to get career information about the careers you are considering.

One of the quickest ways to get career information is to make a meeting with a career counselor like myself. Meet with someone who is knowledgeable about many careers and who will help you find a career that fits well with who you are and with what you value. Whatever career you choose, it must be connected to something you value. It is a terrible thing to get up for work in the morning and realize that you could care less about your job and that it has no real value to the rest of the world.

You can also find great career information by doing an internship or by visiting different careers that interest you. For example, if becoming a teacher interests you, try helping out in a teacher's classroom for a few weeks and see if it is something you'd really enjoy. You will be so glad that you took time to try something before you made a commitment to it. After all, you cannot afford to keep changing your mind about careers and end up unhappy in the process.

Get career information and be one step closer to having a career that excites you and that fits your dreams and values. There is nothing better than that.

How To Take The Biggest Secret Of Your Online Business And Make A Fortune Offline Too

Description:

Would you like to know the secrets that helped Joshua Shafran sell over $30 million online?

Content:

In a recent interview with Tellman Knudson for the List Crusade program, Joshua Shafran, revealed secrets from his Net Profits On Demand system, which he has used to sell over $30 million online.

(Note: To access Joshua Shafran's complete audio interview for fre^e, see end of article)

Joshua is not like most "Gurus,"--he spends most of his time DOING business (instead of just talking about it). As a result his name may not be familiar to you, because he's too busy making himself and his clients rich everyday on the front lines of business.

When asked why his Net Profits on Demand (N-POD) system is so powerful, Joshua said:

"Some people talk about the N-POD system as being an online business model creation process, but I look at it as more of a holistic approach.

My entire philosophy in business is that people have a business, period... and it's not an online business, it's not an offline business, it's a business. And if they're smart, that business has online components and offline components.

The beautiful part about the online world is that you can test things very quickly. That's probably the biggest benefit to the online internet world is the speed at which you can test different marketing ideas and concepts, and once they're perfected and you know they're profitable, then roll them out and include them in the offline world as well.

I guess a lot people think of the online world as low cost, or no cost. It definitely is a lot less expensive than the offline world, but I don't think that's the biggest benefit, frankly.

I think the biggest benefit is the speed at which you can test and perfect your business models and then roll them out once you got them working properly."

How to Sell Raffle Tickets & Promote your Raffle

Description:

You will need to organize ticket sellers, keep a record of ticket distribution, and collect cash. Numbered raffle tickets make it easy to keep track of which tickets are given to which sellers. Adding a little friendly competition into the mix might be a good idea; offer a reward or prize for whomever sells the most raffle tickets. Allow at least one month for raffle ticket sales, and keep a chart or graph that highlights the progress of sellers.

Notes for raffle organizers:

You will need to organize ticket sellers, keep a record of ticket distribution, and collect cash. Numbered raffle tickets make it easy to keep track of which tickets are given to which sellers. Adding a little friendly competition into the mix might be a good idea; offer a reward or prize for whomever sells the most raffle tickets. Allow at least one month for raffle ticket sales, and keep a chart or graph that highlights the progress of sellers.

Make sure that any rules or guidelines for the raffle are known and followed by all involved. Does the buyer need to be present to win? Do you need the buyers address on the raffle ticket, or just the name and phone number? What is the price of each raffle ticket? What are the prizes to be given out? What forms of payment will you accept for raffle tickets? Are there any local regulations or ordinances that restrict your raffle?

You may wish to combine raffle ticket sales with some other event. If your group hosts a carnival, concert, or other attraction, admission tickets can also serve as raffle tickets.

You need not spend a lot in advertising to get the word out about your raffle. Many local groups and businesses would probably love to support your cause. Contact local police and fire departments; see if theyd be willing to buy raffle tickets or help promote your raffle. Ask local churches and charity groups if they can help out. Talk to grocery store managers; see if theyll let you set a table up outside their store to allow you to promote your raffle and sell your raffle tickets. Contact TV and radio stations to try to arrange some coverage of your raffle fundraiser.
Notes for ticket sellers:

Set a goal for yourself. How many raffle tickets would you like to sell? Make definite plans for when and where you will go out selling.

You have to tell people about the raffle to sell raffle tickets! Talk about the event to friends, family members, and neighbors. When someone says, Whats new? tell the person that youre selling raffle tickets. Talk about your organization, what its goals are, and what the money will be used for.

Ask for the sale. Sincerity is the only key ingredient you need. If you believe in your cause, your cause will sell itself. All you have to do is say, "Hey, you want to buy some raffle tickets?"

Hardware is the physical equipment of computing and computer-directed activities. The physical components of a computer system. Contrast with software.

Sofware is programs that run on a computer. Word-processing software includes programs that enable writers to compose, edit, store, and print material. Professional quality software packages incorporate such amenities as databases that can feed the results of research electronically into the final manuscript, alphabetization and indexing functions, and capabilities for constructing tables and charts and adding graphics to the body of the manuscript. ...

A home based business is a business whose primary office is in the owner's home. The business can be any size or any type as long as the office itself is located in a home.

A Home based business can be extremely rewarding, but please do not going into this thinking that it will be cake walk because I guarantee you, that cake is the only thing you will be able to afford.

There's almost no-one nowadays who doesn't have a computer -- it's more-or-less a given that you've got a computer in your home office, and that you use it almost every day. But are you getting as much out of it as you could be? Here are some things your computer can do that you might not have thought of.

Once you start to get some customers, you'll need to keep track of their contact details, as well as making sure you know who they are in case you forget. You have a choice: you can keep a file for each customer in your filing cabinet, or you could enter their details into a computerised database.

Once you've got your database telling you what you've sold to who and when, you can use it to produce all sorts of graphs and other reports that could help you to spot trends and see what works and what doesn't.

With inexpensive accounting software, it's not hard to use your computer to keep track of all your incomings and outgoings -- it can even be integrated with your customer database. Since you'll have all your sales data electronically already, it'll be a snap to do your taxes at the end of the year, where for people who have it all on paper it can be a complete nightmare.

With Internet access, you can read articles from the specialist press of the whole world, and keep up to date with all the latest technologies and trends in your industry. It's worth picking out the top five or so most important sites to your business and spending a few minutes each day checking them. After all, you don't want to get left behind.

There's one thing, though, that it's important to always remember: when you use your computer to store any data that you can't afford to lose, make regular backups and keep them in a safe place. It's really not that much trouble, and if you don't do i then a simple computer failure can devastate your business.

"When I asked my accountant if anything could get me out of this mess I am in now he thought for a long time and said, 'Yes, death would help'." Robert Morley.

American Women Earn Less Than Men

Description:

Men will probably grin and women will naturally grumble, but a new study reveals the fact that in the USA, women professionals earn less than their male counterparts.

Content:

Men will probably grin and women will naturally grumble, but a new study reveals the fact that in the USA, women professionals earn less than their male counterparts. And here's what takes the cake: it may actually be the women's fault why they are making less than the guys.

According to the survey released recently at the annual meeting of the Academy of Management, women do not charge as much for their professional services as their male counterparts despite providing the same kind of work. The study said the reason for this is the woman's "concern for relationships with clients."

Citing a random sampling of 536 veterinarians, the study said female vets tended to charge their less privileged clients less than what they would charge their more affluent customers. Males, on the other hand, had a standard set of charges which did not change depending on the client's situation. About one third of the study's respondents were women.

The study said the women vets brought down their prices out of concerns for their customers and because they "cared more about their relationships with their customers than did the men."

The study involved the vets answering questions about a hypothetical situation wherein a 12-year-old dog with advanced kidney failure was brought to their attention. The hypothetical client was described either as a young professional or an elderly widow. The study found that the women charged the widow less than the young professional for the same service.

The study also mentioned, though, that in the bigger veterinary practices, women vets tended to charge their clients more because they "took into consideration the needs of their co-workers as well."

The study noted that women made price adjustments after taking into consideration the situation of their customers and that of their colleagues. Apparently, the relationships of women with their various publics held greater weight than the relationships of men with theirs.

The study cited a similar instance in 2003 when a separate research study produced the same results. During that instance, researchers found that female mortgage lenders earned $575 less per loan compared to male mortgage lenders. According to that study, women brokers "were more concerned about establishing good relationships and being nice" than their male counterparts.

Overall, the study also mentioned the fact that based on US government statistics, women earned about 80 cents for every dollar that the men made.

How to Promote Your Network Marketing Home Business

Description:

Tips to improve your MLM Business

Content:

The key to any network marketing home business is promotion, and the only difference between an in person business and Internet business is the way that you conduct your business. Instead of being face to face with the people, everything is conducted over the Internet including the training and salesmanship. The only time you may interact in a personal way is if the line of sponsorship that heads your organization decides to arrange a sales meeting or convention.

It's important to remember that promotion is the most important part of your business, and for your business to be successful, you have to promote, promote, promote. There are several ways you can accomplish that, but the most important promotional tool you have is in your ranking with the search engines, that allows people to find your website in a search, especially Google, which tends to be the search engine of choice for many people. Accomplishing this means making sure that your site is optimized for the search engines, a process called Search Engine Optimization (SEO). It may cost a little bit to do, but it's worth it in the end because SEO will guarantee that your website gets top ranking with the search engines, thus a better chance that it will come up early in a search.

Of course, before you even think about SEO, you have to make sure that you submit your website to the search engines so that they know it exists. Several services are available that allow you to do this for free such as Submitexpress.com, and it goes to 40 search engines. If you wish to submit it to more, you can purchase a premium package that allows you to submit your site to hundreds of search engines, directories, and free for all pages. The more places that you submit your site, the better the chance that someone will visit your site and want to join your network. If not, you will at least find people who are interested in the product or products you are selling and become a customer. That, of course, is one of the underlying keys to network marketing, that those who are not interested in the business will be interested in buying its products.

Another means for promoting your business is to place a classified ad. There are a number of sites that are free, so there is no need to spend an enormous amount of money advertising your business. In addition, there are email groups and newsletters where you can advertise your business as well. You just want to be careful not to spam because many network marketing organizations will cancel your membership for spamming; they offer specific guidelines concerning the acceptable forms of business promotion, and if you deviate from that, you lose whatever time and money you have invested.

Start a Hot Cookie Delivery Business

Description:

A stay at home mom who loves to make and bake homemade cookies can start this home-based business.

Content:

A stay at home mom who loves to make and bake homemade cookies can start this home-based business. Who in their right mind would ever turn down the scrumptious morsel of a freshly baked brownie, chocolate chip or almond cookie? Cookies are as American as apple pie and millions of moms and grandmothers bake the absolute best cookies straight out of their homes.

The marketing niche of this business is that you bake cookies and then deliver them hot to a customer. The business model is very much the same as that of the pizza delivery business. In the pizza business, they bake pizzas to order and then deliver them to their clients straight from the oven. This is exactly what you do in the hot cookie delivery business.

This is how the business works. You have ready-made dough, which you have either pre-made or purchased from the store. I would suggest that you find a great recipe from your grandmother or from someone you know and bake it yourself. Customers call in their order with at least an hours notice and give you their order. (You should stipulate a minimum order and a maximum driving distance; otherwise, you will be baking five cookies and delivering it to a home 20 miles out of town) Once they give you their order, you bake the cookies, and then place them in a container that will hold its heat so that your cookies do not arrive cold.

You can market your hot cookie delivery business to local businesses around your neighborhood. If possible, you want your market to be very close to where you will be baking the cookies. It will be even better if you live in a city where there are hundreds of businesses located in a very small area.

To get the word out you can make and bake a sampling of your cookies to hand as a taste test. Good business targets are real estate agents, accountants and any office workers who can take five minutes to taste your cookies. Before you leave make sure they get an ordering guide and even some coupons for first time orders.

I hope that this article has inspired you to try this business idea. The beauty of this business startup is that you can start it with very little initial capital. You will need a quality oven, a phone that can stay open for order taking and possibly even a fax machine. Once you outgrow your startup location, you will need to find a small kitchen with a commercial oven. At that point, you can begin to approach the Small Business Development Corporation for assistance with planning for your business growth. For now let us focus on the first step of getting started, established and financial healthy, I wish you all the best in starting your new business.

Selling your Business - Step by Step Process

Description:

Selling a successful running business is not as simple as it sounds. This article throws light on the process of selling a business from start to end and emphasis on certain key points which are normally overlooked.

Content:

So finally the time has come to sell the business. After investing years of your time and uncounted thousands of dollars, it has become successful, providing for your needs and wants, and it's time to enjoy the fruits of your labor. Where do you start?

A good time to start thinking about selling a business is right after startup, when it shows signs of beginning to succeed and become self-sustaining. Even if you are planning on bequeathing it to your progeny or a partner, it's never too early to think about what will happen afterwards.

The first step is to take your time--selling a business is a complex process and you will only do it once. Confidentiality is a necessity at this point, as word of an impending sale can cause repercussions among employees and business partners (suppliers, customers, etc.) alike.

Your position in the business is also a point to consider. If you are the sole proprietor, the decision is yours alone. However, if you are a partner or board member, selling your part of the business will involve more considerations.

Finding a good broker is worth any amount of time needed to locate one you are comfortable with. Check the Better Business Bureau for any investigation history, and get referrals from fellow business owners or from industry associations like the International Business Brokers Association (IBBA). This is a non-profit "trade association of business brokers providing education, conferences, professional designations and networking opportunities" (IBBA), as well as professional certifications and boasts over 1300 members.

Next, a professional appraiser should be consulted, as just like selling a home, a professional appraisal will give a fair value to begin negotiations with. Keep in mind though, an appraisal is an estimate of the fair value of a business' hard assets, and the market value of the business may be higher or lower, as a business is only worth what someone else is willing to pay.

Determining major terms and price are issues that you are going to have to work out with your broker, but a few basic factors come into play: what do you want to get out of the sale? Continuing salary? Lump sum? Stock options? This is a step often overlooked until late in the negotiations, often to the detriment of the seller.

Financing the sale is usually about 90% left to the seller. If you can't or won't be willing to cover the costs of the sale, it may not be a good time to sell.

Once you and your broker have located a buyer and agreed on a price, a Letter of Intent is drafted. This letter outlines the terms and tentative price in a non-binding document and allows the buyer time to thoroughly investigate the business. This process is subject to Due Diligence, as the onus of discovery is placed upon the buyer and buyer's agent.

After the discovery process is completed to both parties' satisfaction, the Purchase Agreement is drafted. This set of paperwork creates a formal agreement between buyer and seller regarding purchase price, terms, and other legal details. Once the respective lawyers have finalized the details and complied with state law requirements regarding the sale, the Purchase Agreement is signed, closing documents finalized, and the sale is complete. If everything has gone well, it's time to breathe a sigh of relief and start planning what to do with all that free time!

Achieving Sales on the Telephone - Effective Outbound Calls

Description:

The best way to predict who your future customers will be is to understand who your past customers have been. For instance, if by looking at your past client base you realise that the majority of your orders have come from the 18 – 30 year old bracket, then this would likely be the best people to focus your attention on.

The key to making effective outbound calls is structure. The most effective telephone sales person will have a set process for contacting customers and will stick to it, no matter what the temptation to alter their methods. Most outbound call agents will use a ‘working list’ to contact customers, it is important that you approach this list methodically and the following approach will help you to remain effective.

Define your ideal customer – The best way to predict who your future customers will be is to understand who your past customers have been. For instance, if by looking at your past client base you realise that the majority of your orders have come from the 18 – 30 year old bracket, then this would likely be the best people to focus your attention on. Of course age isn’t the only consideration to make. You may also want to look at geography, past buying patterns, interests etc.

Develop a good ‘script’ – A good script or series of specific questions is the most important thing you can do to improve your effectiveness when selling on the telephone. This becomes even more important when you are making outbound calls.

Some people resist the idea of using a script. They argue that it is better to sound natural and this will help build the relationship with the customer. The trick is to use the script as a series of prompts or reminder of what to say rather than reading it verbatim. This way you can concentrate on how you say things as opposed to what you are saying. More importantly, it allows you to focus on what the customer is saying and helps you tailor your conversation to suit.

The script should be seen as a method of allowing you to be flexible in your approach as opposed to being a restraint.

Eliminate – The trouble with making outbound sales calls is you usually have absolutely no idea of the level of interest of the recipient until you have called them. It may be that the first ten people you call are all interested in what you have to sell. Alternatively, it may be the last ten! You role is simply to find those people that are interested and temporarily eliminate those that are not. It is useful to methodical in your approach to calling customers.

It is tempting to disregard the customers that you couldn’t reach or did not show an immediate interest. However, a good salesperson will ensure that they follow-up on all of these opportunities. In order to ensure you keep track of the customers you have previously called, it is useful to create a system of note-taking. If a customer is not available then you should make a good clear note of this next to their contact details, or you could mark their level of interest from 1 – 3. By using this system you will ensure that you are fully prepared when it is time to call them again. Although this may seem tedious, it is a lot better than having to call a prospect ‘cold’.

Persist – A good telephone salesperson will develop a thick skin throughout their career. You will need to accept rejection as part of the job and consider each new call as a new opportunity. Even the most hardy individual will get despondent at times, it is useful to set your expectations early on and realise that you will not be able to convert the large majority of calls you make. This does not mean that the customer will never buy from you, just not today.

By making clear notes on your call list, you will be able to re-work an old list and even convert some previous rejections. The key to outbound sales is to never give up!

Reselling Web Conferencing Services: How to Profit From the Coming Boom in Web & Video Conferencing

If you want to make money in an online business, then you need to find a product or service that is fresh, up-to-date and that hasn't been beaten to death with hundreds of copy-cat affiliates. Web and video conferencing are relatively new applications, and becoming a reseller of online conferencing services could be a good way to start up or add to an already existing online business. Let's take a look at the prospects for this type of online enterprise.

First of all, web and video conferencing is an up-and-coming field of activity. Business is becoming increasingly globalized and many companies now have staff or clients located in distant locations, sometimes in other countries or on other continents. Online meetings are being used by some of the leading enterprises, but there are many more organizations that have not even begun to take advantage of web or video conferencing.

This is a huge market waiting to be tapped, and with the increasing penetration of broadband use both in the workplace and at home, the market grows larger with each passing month.

Just as there are relatively few companies using web and video conferencing, there are comparatively few resellers or affiliate sellers of these services to compete with. If you would like to get into this business then you should do an online search for web conferencing resellers or affiliates, and choose a program that you can effectively handle.

Typically, affiliate programs for these kinds of services are easy to enter. In many cases all you have to do is sign up and get an affiliate code or url and paste it onto your website and you are in business. However, if you want to be an effective affiliate for web and video conferencing, or for that matter, any other product or service, the best way to sell it is by using it yourself and really knowing what it is all about. Only then can you truly recommend the product in a convincing way.

A step above an affiliate is to become a reseller. Usually this requires a comprehensive training in the web and video conferencing system and there may also be an entry fee attached to becoming a reseller. Whereas affiliates simply refer potential clients to the conferencing service, Resellers are responsible for signing up the clients themselves. The advantage though, is that a reseller is likely to get a higher percentage of the signup and monthly subscription fees paid to the conferencing service by his or her referred clients. If you are successful as a reseller then you will earn a residual income for as long as the people signed-up by you subscribe to the conferencing service.

Whether you decide to become an affiliate or a reseller, the key to cashing in on the coming boom in online conferencing is to study the market, know the product thoroughly and then place it before your web visitors or mailing list audience in a compelling and convincing manner. Another key factor to success is to make a timely move, a product or service that is "new" today will be commonplace tomorrow.

Games To Consider When You're Event Planning

Children love so many things about birthday parties. The food, the birthday cake and the ice cream are at the top of their lists. Right below those favorites is party games. When children attend a birthday party they look forward to the party games they will get to play. A big reason for this is that party games usually have a winner and that winner might get a prize. What child doesn't love a prize?

If you happen to be in charge of event planning for a child's birthday party you are in the enviable position of having a whole host of games to choose from. One of the first things to consider is the age of your young guests. Obviously if you are in charge of entertaining a crowd of three-year-olds you'll need to choose an activity that doesn't require the player to have a long attention span. Standard favorites like pin the tail on the donkey and hot potato are fun for children who haven't mastered skills such as reading yet. Another fun game that keeps children laughing is to have them sit on air filled balloons while trying to pop them. This generally results in them rolling around on the floor as they bounce off the balloons.

For older children you might consider a treasure hunt. This is a great activity that can keep children busy and occupied while you tend to the other aspects of the event. You just hide some objects in your home and draw out maps for the children to search for them. Another twist on this idea is the scavenger hunt. In this instance you give the children a list of items they have to search for and whoever finds all of the items first, wins a prize. If your child is really enthusiastic about this idea you can make it the center of your event planning process. Perhaps choosing a scavenger hunt theme for the entire party including invitations shaped like a magnifying glass or a hunt to find the pizza you've hidden in another room for dinner. Children love activities like this and it's a great way to encourage their junior detective skills.

For the more mature crowd, you can incorporate fun activities into your event planning as well. Perhaps a game of charades or a fun board or card game will entertain a more adult crowd. These types of games are a great way to socialize and they also act as stress relievers. Many men do this already when they have their weekly poker night with their buddies. They may not view it as an event, but it's a great way for them to get together and challenge one another's skill.

Depending on the event you are planning, it can be a plus to play a game or two. It keeps the event moving along and the guests will appreciate having a fun activity to engage in. The smaller ones will appreciate it even more if they win a prize for their efforts.

Are you Finished Before you Start?

Description:

Understanding the impact your mindset has on sales is critical for success. Gain a better understanding of its importance as well as some tips to improve your sales mindset. Don't be finished before you start.

Content:

Clayton Shold

A colleague and I were in conversation recently when he shared a very profound statement, "You can be finished before you start."
We were talking about the power of one's mind, more specifically about ones sales mindset. Eugene was relaying an exchange he had many years ago when he was a pharmaceutical sales rep. He was comparing notes with another rep that was having difficulty getting in to see physicians to promote their company's product. He wanted to know why Eugene was having so much success, and he was not.
Turns out, this other sales rep found it extremely difficult to turn the doorknob to enter the doctor's office. He had such high self-doubt, Eugene explained, that he had lost the sale before he even initiated the call. This is when Eugene summed things up by commenting, "You are finished before you start!"
This simple statement may apply to those suffering with weak sales results. Appreciate sales is not for everyone. Being in the sales profession requires intelligence, personality, perseverance and a strong believe in ones self and belief in ones customer.
When you think about it, your objective is to help your prospect make an informed purchasing decision (or not) based on the knowledge you bring to the table. Most successful sales people are advocates for their prospects, doing what is in the client's best interest. This typically evolves into a meaningful relationship based on mutual trust and understanding. Those that rise to the top in the sales profession also tend to have a high belief in self.
How is your belief in self? Do you experience self-doubt to the point you have trouble dialling that cold call, or making that initial visit to your prospect's office?
This is more common in sales than we think, not just for those new to the business, it can affect experienced sales people who have fallen into the infamous "rut". How we think and how we see our self causes this "affliction".
How we see ourselves in our minds eye determines our belief in self. The subconscious mind is incredibly powerful. Research by psychologists Dr. Henry Murray, Dr. David McClelland, and Dr. Clayton Lafferty has determined our actions are a result of what we think.
The challenge is to recognize when one is not thinking positively about their capabilities and then develop strategies to counteract this thought process. Here are some tips you can use:

  1. Remind yourself of your previous successes

  2. Focus on your current strengths and future potential

  3. Visualize yourself being successful several times a day

  4. Record a positive belief statement you can repeat 5 times a day

  5. Set and achieve realistic goals (start small), then stretch them

  6. Celebrate successes along the way

In the classic book Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill, he makes the case it is scientifically impossible to conceive an idea in your mind, to believe you can do it, and then not be able to. The fact we can conceive something in our mind and believe we can do it, means we can.
Don't be finished before you start. Your sales mindset needs to be the "hidden partner" that allows you to not only succeed in sales, but to thrive.
